Tans continue to be popular, especially with people who naturally have light colour skin. A rich, bronze colour tan can not only be cosmetically flattering, it can evoke a sun-filled vacation spent at the beach or, in winter, on the ski slopes. But given the fact that exposure to the tanning rays of the sun is accompanied by skin damage and an increased risk of skin cancer, these days many people are opting for 'sunless' tans using DHA.

The quality of your airbrush tan will depend not only on the condition of your skin, the solution that the technician will use, but also on technician's skill. After spray tanning, you will have to stand still in front of a fan for about 10-20 minutes, waiting for the solution to dry. Your tan will be instant, as the solution generally contains a lot of bronzer to let the technician see if they missed any spots. The whole process takes between 20min -1/2hour.

After you are dry (about 20 minutes), you can get dressed, but make sure the clothes are loose and dark, as the bronzer can stain! It washes easily out of most fabrics though. Keep cool, because if you sweat, the tan will streak. If you go to bed without showering, you will have to wash sheets in the morning. Avoid white towels for few days. Even though most of the bronzer washes off in the shower, it will now be coming out of your pores, so you still will stain white things.

On the day of your airbrush tan, the colour will be getting darker and darker. At the end of the day it might be darker than you expected or wanted. Your skin is developing its own colour, with a bronzer on top of it. Your skins colour that is developing under the bronzer will be lighter once you wash the bronzer off! So don't panic!

You can shower in about 5 hours (We recommend between 6-8 hours after the spray tan is applied). Be warned - When you shower, the water will run red-brown but it's only the bronzer being washed off. What you should be left with is a great, natural looking tan that your own skin developed underneath the bronzer.

V.I.P!
  • Don’t wear any deodorant, moisturizer or makeup before spray tan.
  • Many deodorants will stop spray tanning solution going through. Some others will turn the armpits a funny colour!
  • Few moisturizers and makeup products can act as a barrier, not letting the full amount of the solution to attach itself to the skin.
  • As soon as you've had your spray tan you can apply deodorant and make up.
  •  Wear loose clothing after your tanning session.
  • Although you dry out in front of a fan, the tan needs to “set”, and the process will take about an hour. It is best to bring clothes and shoes as loose as possible (and dark) to wear after your spray tanning session, to make sure nothing rubs off (and what does come off doesn't discolour your clothing.

Is the Spray Tanning process safe?

  • Yes. All of the components in our BayTan spray tanning solution are officially approved for use on the skin and have been used for several decades.
  • If you have any serious allergies it is always wise to ask. If you have ever had any adverse effects with self-tanning products or moisturizers, you may experience similar effects with our tanning solution.

What about people with fair skin

No problem. Because no sun is involved, tanning is easy (and safe).

Does it turn the skin orange?

  • No! In the early days some products produced and orange colour in some people, and often streaked. Today's formulations and application methods avoid this.
  • Our latest misting technology assures that all areas of the body get a uniform coating of the tanning solution in the exact quantity required to produce a golden brown tan. NB: You Need to make sure you prepare your skin properly before your tan to ensure all the dry skin (ie Elbows, Knees, Soles of Feet and Tops of Toes) is removed by exfoliating. This will help to ensure there are no darker areas that look unnaturally tanned and can look 'orange' as opposed to brown)

What is DHA?

  • According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the most effective sunless tanning products contain DHA (dihydroxyacetone) as the active ingredient. It is not absorbed through the skin into the body and it has no known toxicity.
  • First discovered in Germany in the late 1920s, DHA has been listed with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 1973. It has been used in cosmetic preparations for almost 30 years.
  • DHA is a colourless chemical (it is derived from glycerin) that interacts with the amino acids in surface skin cells to produce a brown colour change. Since these are constantly being shed, the colour change usually lasts about a week, but can be extended if you moisturize 1-2 times a day, and especially if you use our Magic Tan Extender product.
  • How does it work? The DHA sugars react with the proteins in your surface skin cells to create a tanned, golden colour. Magic Tan tanning spray is a blend of DHA and a bronzer to give you a streak-free golden brown tan - no matter what your skin type. The blend also includes aloe and moisturizers to keep your skin healthy as well. You can look great and feel even better!

Do people with hair on their legs/arms develop an uneven tan where hair is present?

  • No. People with hair on their bodies will see tiny droplets of mist on their hairs at the end  of the tanning process. These droplets are removed by toweling off lightly and the same even, golden brown tan is achieved.

What should I wear in the tanning booth?

  • A disposable c-string can be supplied, or you can bring your own garment if you prefer, however some people prefer not wear anything. The room is completely private, so tanning in the nude is perfectly acceptable. If a bathing suit, underwear, or anything else is worn inside the booth, please be aware that it may be stained. Although the bronzer is water-soluble and should wash out of any clothing, the DHA may cause permanent stains.

Do I get better results if I  shave my legs before my session?

  • Yes. If you need to shave or wax your legs do it definitely before and make sure that you wash your legs after waxing to remove any wax residue. If you shave your legs after spray on tan, you will take off some of your tan with the hair.
  • Exfoliation is really the key to acquiring a tan which will provide the most natural fade. So shaving, whether on the legs of women or the face of men, is best done one or two days prior to the tanning session, as the bronzer gets into the newly created pores and can give you "spotty" look.  This, in combination with a good sound skin care regimen, will ensure your tan will last longer and fade more evenly.

How many times will I need I need a BayTan Spray Tan to achieve the colour I want?
  • You will be tanned after one session, but it may take an additional session or two to achieve a darker colour if desired.  Once you reach the desired colour you should be able to maintain it by tanning every 1-2 weeks.

Do I get an even tan, or will some parts of the body be darker?

  • The tan is perfectly even, better than hand-applied lotions. However it is up to you to ensure you have prepared your skin as outlined on the PDF attachment called Preparation Details to ensure an even natural looking tan.

Do I need to cover my hair during use?

  • No it is not necessary but we do recommend it. We provide a disposable shower cap to those who want to put one on, to keep the solution from getting in their hair. For those who don't wear a cap your bald spot will get a great tan as well!
  • Will I get sick if I breathe during the session? We recommend that you hold your breath during the short misting process, which lasts about 45 seconds. We recommend this because most would prefer not to breathe in the mist even though it causes no harm if breathed in. We also suggest you close your eyes because it prevents itchy or scratchy eyes, but its not harmful to eyes.

How soon after the tanning session can I put my clothes back on?

  • Once you have been Blow dried there is little chance of the bronzer or DHA getting on your clothes. If you pursue any strenuous physical activity after your tanning session, perspiration may cause some of the bronzer to transfer to your clothing. However, since the bronzer is completely water-soluble, it will wash out (as long as not left longer than 4 hours to be safe!).

Does this system cause freckles in people who usually freckle before tanning?

  • No. There is nothing in the BayTan spray tanning solution that will cause more freckles to break out. In fact, in most cases, freckles and blemishes will become less pronounced because the lighter skin areas will darken and reduce the colour differentiation between the blemishes and the rest of the skin.

How soon after the tanning session can I shower?

  • We recommend that you wait at least 6-8 hours before you shower. This gives time for the tan to fully set. If you shower earlier, you may diminish the intensity of the tan. When you do shower, the initial tan created by the water-soluble bronzer will wash off, but the DHA will remain and create the tan.

Can I also use the sun or a UV-tanning bed?

  • Yes. There is nothing in the BayTan spray tanning solution that would prevent you from using a tanning bed or lying in the sun.             However, remember that your new BayTan tan does not give any protection from the UV rays, either from the sun or UV sunbed.

Will my palms get stains on them?

  • Some people's palms take on more solution than others. We recommend using a little lotion on them to prevent colouration and holding the palms away from the direction of the application of the spray solution.
  • A simple way of getting them white is to spread some lemon juice on them, or if all else fails a little bleach on a cotton wool.

Extra Tips!

  • My tan looks different than the last time! The skin is a living thing and it varies with the season, time of the month, foods you eat, weather etc.  Hence the tan MAY vary.

  • The tan wears off quicker on my hands and feet. This is because your hands and feet are more exposed to the elements or are subject to more rubbing in your shoes. Also washing hands (like with a manicure) and wearing gloves, when gardening or doing the dishes, will help.

  • I have some brown patches on my knuckles and elbows. Take some exfoliator, or a wet soapy washer, and very gently rub off the excess. Not too hard so you don't finish with a white patch.

  • What should I do before my tanning session? Preparing before spray tan is crucial. What you do can mean a difference between a good and a bad spray tan. Please note the most important thing to do to ensure a good even natural looking Spray Tan is to Exfoliate before hand. (The spray tanning solution affects only the dead skin cells. Your skin has a build up of dead skin cells on top of it. The thicker the layer, the sooner it will rub off. If you exfoliate, the layer will be very shallow, and it will take a while for it to “build up”. Your tan will last longer. It is important to use either exfoliating glove or products that don't contain any oils, otherwise the oily barrier can stop the spray tanning solution getting through.)
